How to Distinguish Between Bonded and Sintered NdFeB Magnets?

Applications of NdFeB Magnetic Materials

NdFeB (Neodymium Iron Boron) magnetic materials, a pinnacle of rare-earth permanent magnet development, are often hailed as the "Magnet King" due to their superior magnetic properties. NdFeB is an alloy primarily composed of Praseodymium-Neodymium metal and Ferroboron, commonly referred to as magnetic steel.

Featuring exceptionally high magnetic energy products and coercivity, the high energy density of NdFeB allows for the miniaturization, reduction in weight, and thinning of modern industrial and electronic equipment, such as instrumentation, electroacoustic motors, and magnetic separation devices.

Differences Between Bonded and Sintered NdFeB Magnets

While both belong to the NdFeB family, they are distinguished primarily by their manufacturing processes:

Bonded NdFeB: Produced by mixing NdFeB magnetic powder with a binder, then forming the shape through compression or injection molding.

Sintered NdFeB: Formed by heating raw materials in a high-vacuum environment at elevated temperatures.

Key Comparisons:

Feature

Bonded (Injection Molded) NdFeB

Sintered NdFeB

Composition

Contains resin/binder; density is approx. 70% of pure powder.

Pure magnetic alloy; no non-magnetic resin phases.

Magnetic Performance

Lower; typically around 30% of sintered performance.

High; anisotropic magnets with superior strength.

Energy Product ($BH_{max}$)

Generally below 15M.

Can exceed 50M.

Manufacturing

Precise shapes formed directly via molding.

Produced as blanks; requires machining (cutting, grinding).

Physical Properties

Tougher; easier to form complex shapes.

Brittle and hard; high processing loss and cost.

Durability

Better inherent stability.

Poor corrosion resistance; requires surface electroplating.

In summary, while bonded magnets offer greater flexibility in shape and precision, sintered magnets are the go-to choice for high-power applications despite their brittleness and the need for protective coating.
